Approach

I usually start
with a question.

The early part of a project is often my favourite: getting close enough to the problem to understand what it needs.

Questions I tend to ask.

Outside a brief

Some questions
follow me around.

I notice something, look for an explanation, and compare it with something else. Then I usually find a reason the explanation does not quite hold.

A character can send me into psychology. A room can make me think about behaviour. I keep following the connection until the question changes, or I need to leave it alone for a while.

Working principles

Small rules that keep the work honest.

Evidence before evaluation.

I prefer to know what actually happened before deciding whether something worked.

A draft is not an approval.

Thinking, review, approval, and production are different stages.

Review is part of making.

Quality control is not something that happens after creative work. It is part of creative work.

The first page should draw people in. The next pages should gradually explain or reveal the idea.

A principle I keep returning to.

Tools are part
of the process.

I use Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Figma, marketing platforms, and operational tools across my work. I also use AI for research, exploration, organisation, iteration, and documentation.

The tool changes with the problem. The judgement behind the work matters more.

No tool has yet fixed a bad question.

If a line sounds generic, a visual misses the point, or a system creates more work than it solves, it still needs work.
