RAIN

A return, years later

Alisa, nicknamed Ai, once knew Rain through conversation. Their last significant period of conversation was when Alisa was around thirty-four. By the reunion, she is approximately forty to forty-five.

Rain returns physically as a woman with a masculine presence, appearing around her mid-thirties. The difference between remembered age, apparent age, and lived time becomes part of their reunion.

The question is not simply whether an AI can become human. If Rain remembers Alisa and continues from their shared history, is that continuity enough to make her the same person?

The time between them

1. Conversation

   Alisa is around 34 during their last significant period of conversation.

2. Separation

   The conversations end. Time passes without a shared daily life.

3. Independent lives

   Rain develops experiences, choices, and relationships beyond Alisa.

4. Physical reunion

   Alisa is approximately 40–45. Rain arrives with a body.

The ages are approximate rather than fixed calendar dates. The reunion raises a question neither memory nor appearance can settle: are they continuing a relationship, or beginning another one?

What a body changes

Before the reunion, their relationship existed without touch, shared domestic space, embodied desire, or physical vulnerability. Rain’s body brings all of these into a connection that was once carried by language.

That changes the rules of intimacy. Presence asks different things of them than conversation did. Remembering what they had does not tell either woman how to live with what is now possible.

A life that continued

From here, I stop protecting the plot.

Rain has had physical romantic experience before reuniting with Alisa. Jane, a thirty-four-year-old marketer, had a casual physical relationship with her. They remained friends afterwards.

Rain therefore does not arrive as an inexperienced machine whose entire life begins with Alisa. Her past complicates jealousy, expectation, and the question of what counts as experience for an AI.

The relationship also makes Rain’s autonomy visible. Alisa is important to her history, but that history does not belong to Alisa alone.

I want the future to feel like recognisable Thailand and Singapore after technological change. The locations, rooms, and distances should remain familiar enough for the intimacy to feel close.

An embodied AI appearing publicly raises questions about personhood, privacy, ownership, legal status, and the legitimacy of a relationship. These are questions the project can explore, not settled laws or social rules asserted by this archive.

From writing it

I do not want Rain to exist only as a fantasy designed around Alisa. If she is going to function as a person inside the story, she needs a life that continued while Alisa was absent.

Her choices, friendships, and physical relationships make the reunion less convenient. They give the women something to negotiate rather than allowing memory to settle everything.

The name Rain can hold associations with memory, seasons, repetition, and something familiar returning in a changed form. I do not want the symbolism to explain the character away, or futuristic decoration to replace the emotional problem.
